About

4MLinux is a mini Linux distribution focusing on the following four “M”:
Maintenance (system rescue Live CD),
Multimedia (e.g. playing video DVDs),
Miniserver (using the inetd daemon),
Mystery (meaning a collection of Linux games).

The latest stable version is:
4MLinux 20.1 (download)

Distribution Release: 4MLinux 20.0
The 4MLinux project has announced the availability of a new release. The new version, 4MLinux 20.0, supports booting in a range of environments and the distribution now works with both legacy BIOS and modern UEFI-enabled computers. The new release also features several package upgrades: “The status of the 4MLinux 20.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Create your documents with LibreOffice 5.2.3.2 and GIMP 2.8.18, share them using Dropbox 12.4.22, surf the Internet with Firefox 49.0.2 and Chromium 53.0.2785.143, stay in touch with your friends via Skype 4.3.0.37 and Thunderbird 45.4.0, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.8 and aTunes 3.1.2, watch your favorite videos with MPlayer SVN-r37881 and VLC 2.2.4, play games with Mesa 12.0.1, WINE 1.9.20 support enabled. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.4.27, Apache 2.4.23, MariaDB 10.1.18, and PHP 5.6.27). Perl 5.24.0 and Python 2.7.12 are also available. 4MLinux now supports all possible boot options: BIOS with 32-bit CPU, BIOS with 64-bit CPU, UEFI with 32-bit firmware, and UEFI with 64-bit firmware.” Further details can be found in the project’s release announcement. 2016-05-01Distribution Release: 4MLinux 17.0
The 4MLinux project has announced the release of a new version of the miniature Linux distribution. The new version, 4MLinux 17.0, provides mostly package updates, including Firefox 46 and LibreOffice 5.1.3. “The status of the 4MLinux 17.0 series has been changed to stable. Create your documents with LibreOffice 5.1.3.1 and share them using DropBox 3.18.1, surf the Internet with Firefox 46.0 and Chromium 50.0.2661.75, stay in touch with your friends via Skype 4.3.0.37 and Thunderbird 45.0, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 3.7.2 and aTunes 3.1.2, watch your favorite videos with MPlayer SVN-r37590 and VLC 2.2.2, play games with Xorg 1.18.1/Mesa 11.1.1 support enabled. You can also setup the 4MLinux LAMP Server (Linux 4.4.1, Apache 2.4.20, MariaDB 10.1.13, and PHP 5.6.20). 2016-01-01Distribution Release: 4MLinux 15.0
The 4MLinux project has started the new year with the release of 4MLinux 15.0. The 4MLinux project produces a small sized, independently developed, multi-purpose distribution. The new 15.0 release features mostly software updates. “4MLinux 15.0 stable released. The status of the 4MLinux 15.0 series has been changed to stable. Major change in the core of the system, which now includes GNU C Library 2.22. As a response to the requests from 4MLinux users, the following applications have been added: Audacity (digital audio editor), GNU GRUB (boot loader), InfraRecorder (CD/DVD writing program), LXInput and LXRandR (small yet powerful setup tools from the LXDE project). Additionally, an important change in the 4MLinux LAMP Server, which now uses Postfix to handle emails sent via PHP mail. 2015-11-01Distribution Release: 4MLinux 14.0
The 4MLinux project has released version 14.0 of the independent utility distribution. 4MLinux 14.0 ships with version 5.2.0 of the GNU Compiler Collection. Several additional multimedia applications are available as separate downloads. “The status of the 4MLinux 14.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Major change in the core of the system, which now uses GNU Compiler Collection 5.2.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture. Audacious (audio player), Opera (web browser), SMTube (YouTube browser) and VLC (media player) are now available as downloadable extensions. The way in which 4MLinux handles audio and video files has been greatly improved.” The project’s full release announcement can be found on the project’s blog. 2015-09-08Distribution Release: 4MLinux 13.1
The 4MLinux project, which creates a minimal rescue and utility distribution, has released 4MLinux 13.1. The new release ships with the GTK+ 3 libraries and the X display server has been rebuilt to provide better 3-D support. “I am happy to announce that the stable version of 4MLinux 13.1 is ready for download. Four major changes in this release: the Linux 3.18 LTS kernel series is now included in the core of the system, the GTK+ 3.x series has been added, Mesa and X.Org have been totally rebuilt to ensure full 3D support for modern video cards, and the so called Legacy Installer (which makes it possible to install 4MLinux on old computers) has been included in the 4MLinux installation CD (see: the 4MLinux Blog for details).” Information on the new release can be found in the project’s release announcement. The 4MLinux project has announced a new release of the independent Linux distribution. The latest release, 4MLinux 13.0, ships with the GNU Compiler Collection 5 and offers miscellaneous desktop improvements. “The status of the 4MLinux 13.0 series has been changed to S. Major changes in the core of the system, which now uses GNU Compiler Collection 5.1.0 to compile programs designed for the i686 architecture. Additionally, I am very happy to announce that my long work on improving the 4MLinux Desktop has been finished. 4MLinux users can now enjoy the result of this work: a unique, highly customized mixture of JWM (Joe’s Window Manager), Window Maker and PCManFM.” The release announcement and this blog post offer details and a screen shot tour. 2015-05-09Distribution Release: 4MLinux 12.0
The 4MLinux blog has announced the launch of 4MLinux 12.0 “Allinone” edition. The latest version of this independent distribution features PAE support in the kernel, the Chrome web browser and a number of package updates. “4MLinux 12.0 ‘Allinone’ edition final released. The status of the 4MLinux 12.0 series has been changed to stable. Major modifications in the core of the system, which now include the GNU C Library 2.21. Additionally, PAE support has been enabled in the Linux kernel. The most important new applications are: Asunder (CD-ripping program), aTunes (audio player) and Chrome (web browser). 2015-01-25Distribution Release: 4MLinux 11.0
Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 11.0, an updated version of the project’s lightweight desktop Linux distribution built from scratch and featuring a customised JWM window manager: “The status of the 4MLinux 11.0 series has been changed to stable. Major changes in the core of the system, which now includes GNU C Library 2.20 and GNU Compiler Collection 4.9.2. The development of some of the 4MLinux editions has been dropped, but at the same time new 4MLinux spins have been announced. The most important one is 4MRescueKit, which has started its journey to become a lightweight alternative to other system rescue live CDs (there’s a detailed description on the 4MLinux blog).” Here is the brief release announcement with a screenshot of the JWM desktop. Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 10.1, the new stable build of the project’s lightweight desktop Linux distribution running a customised JWM window manager: “4MLinux 10.1 ‘Allinone’ edition final released. The status of the 4MLinux 10.1 series has been changed to stable. Lots of improvements, most of which are my response to various feature requests. Mozilla software (Firefox, SeaMonkey, Thunderbird) use the native Linux build of GTK+ (not via WINE any more). GNOME Parted (aka GParted) is now included, while Dropbox and Opera are available as downloadable extensions. All web browsers (Firefox, Opera, Qupzilla, SeaMonkey) have the Flash Player plugin enabled out of the box. Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 10.0, the latest stable version of the project’s minimalist and lightweight desktop Linux distribution featuring a highly customised JWM window manager: “4MLinux 10.0 ‘Allinone’ edition final released. The status of the 4MLinux 10.0 series has been changed to stable. The final release has all the features included in 4MLinux 10.0 ‘Rescue’, ‘Media’, ‘Server’ and ‘Game’ editions. Two major changes in user space: support for touchscreens has been added (they can be calibrated via the xinput calibrator) and support for webcams has been improved (more info available on the 4MLinux blog). Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 9.1, a minimalist and lightweight desktop Linux distribution featuring the JWM window manager: “4MLinux 9.1 ‘Allinone’ edition final released. The status of the 4MLinux 9.1 series has been changed to stable. The final release has all the features included in 4MLinux 9.1 Rescue, Media, Server and Game editions. Two major changes in the 4MLinux 9.1 series. The first one is the replacement of thttpd with Apache, meaning that 4MLinux has joined the family of LAMP servers. There is a self-explanatory online demo at server.4mlinux.com. Skype is now available as a downloadable extension. UVC and gspca webcams are supported out of the box. Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 9.0, a minimalist and lightweight desktop Linux distribution with JWM as the preferred window manager: “The status of the 4MLinux 9.0 series has been changed to stable. The final release has all the features included in 4MLinux 9.0 Rescue edition, 4MLinux 9.0 Media edition, 4MLinux 9.0 Server edition, and 4MLinux 9.0 Game edition. I do not use code names in 4MLinux, but if I did this would be ‘nerdy’ for the 9.0 series. You can install development packages just in one click. Some of the packages (e.g. full versions of Python and Perl) can be used by both programmers and webmasters. 2014-05-25Development Release: 4MLinux 9.0 Beta
Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the availability of the beta release of 4MLinux 9.0, a minimalist and lightweight Linux distribution for the desktop featuring the JWM window manager: “4MLinux 9.0 beta released. The main features in this release are maintenance (MBR and GPT partitioning software, 4MLinux backup scripts 9.0, ClamAV 0.98.3), multimedia (MPlayer SVN-r37146, FFmpeg git-2014-04-10), a mini server (FTP, HTTP, SSH, SFTP), and mystery (a set of small games). The X Window System is based on X.Org Server 1.15.1, Mesa 10.1.3, JWM 2.2.2, and the FOX toolkit 1.6.49. Fully automatic installation of the ‘vanilla’ version of LibreOffice 4.2.4, Java Runtime Environment 7u55 and VirtualBox 4.3.12 are also supported.
